The Marvel Cinematic Universe makes its debut at the United Palace with a screening of Academy Award-winning blockbuster film "Black Panther” (2018) on Sunday, September 18, followed by a talk back with our good friend, patron, and neighbor Lin-Manuel Miranda and Danai Gurira, who played General Okoye, the head of Wakandan armed forces and intel.

Gurira is an award-winning playwright and actress. Distinguished as the first African female writer to have a play on Broadway, and to bring the perspective of African women to mainstream theater, her stage plays give voice to untold narratives. They include “In the Continuum” (OBIE Award, Outer Critics Award, Helen Hayes Award), “Eclipsed” (Tony nomination: Best Play, NAACP Award, Helen Hayes Award: Best New Play), and “The Convert” (six Ovation Awards, L.A. Outer Critics Award). Her newest play, “Familiar,” received its world premiere at Yale Rep and premiered in New York at Playwrights Horizons in February of 2016. Most recently she signed an overall deal with ABC Studios where she will develop, write and produce for the studio across all platforms.

As an actor, Gurira won a People’s Choice Award (Favorite Action Movie Star), an NAACP Image Award (Outstanding Supporting Actress/Motion Picture) and a shared SAG Award (Outstanding Performance by a Cast/Motion Picture) for her work in “Black Panther.” She reprised her role of General Okoye in “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame,” which went on to become the #1 top grossing film in history. In November she will reprise her role of Okoye in the highly anticipated “Black Panther” sequel, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” This summer Gurira starred as the title character of “Richard III” for Shakespeare in the Park which was directed by Robert O’Hara. She will next go into production on a limited series for AMC in which she will reprise her role of Michonne from “The Walking Dead.” She will also serve as an executive producer.

“Black Panther,” about the heir to the hidden but advanced kingdom of Wakanda ascending to the throne and confronting a challenger from his country's past, is one of the top-rated and highest-grossing films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Besides Guira, it stars the late Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, and Lupita Nyong'o. It was directed by Ryan Coogler and written by Ryan Coogler     and Joe Robert Cole based on the Marvel comics by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The movie is 2 hours, 14 minutes long.

Tickets will be made available for reservation at www.unitedpalace.org at 9am on Monday, September 12.  (If you can not use your tickets, please email so the tickets can be given to another fan.)

“Black Panther” is the fifth of six movies selected by over 2,000 online voters to fill out the United Palace’s movie season. The last screening of the season is “Coco” scheduled for October 16.
